Physical Education

J.J. CURLING SCHOOL

PHYSICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM

MS. GEORGINA ETHERIDGE, TEACHER

The goal of Physical Education (PE) in Newfoundland & Labrador schools is to empower students to attain healthy, lifelong attitudes and behaviors through physical activity, as part of the total educational experience. PE teachers provide learning experiences from three outcomes:

1.     psychomotor (participating)

2.     cognitive (understanding)

3.     affective (cooperation and responsibility)

A variety of activities and equipment resources are used in an atmosphere which promotes participation, self discipline, respect, cooperation, and fair play.

See over for the Department of Education PE outcomes.

The focus in the primary grades (K - 3) is on basic movement patterns found in locomotor, non locomotor, creative, rhythmic, and manipulative activities.

The focus in the elementary grades (4 - 6) is on skills required to play lead up games and mini sports.

Parents/Guardians will be informed through the classroom teacher of the days for PE classes. Students in primary (Grade K - 3) should attend school dressed for PE. Well fitted sneakers, loose pants, and short sleeve t - shirt are appropriate. Students in elementary (Grade 4 - 6) are expected to bring their clothes to school and change in the change rooms. Sneakers, shorts or loose pants, and a short sleeve t - shirt are appropriate. A suggestion is for elementary students is to bring a couple sets of shorts and t shirts to school on Mondays to hang in their locker. Please keep safety in mind when making your selection on footwear as many fashionable styles do not serve as athletic footwear. The slip-on, flat or high footwear are not adequate for movement activities. Sneakers with arch support and rubber soles such as athletic trainers are recommended as the safest and most comfortable. Footwear with heavy duty velcro is suitable for primary students and laces for elementary students. Gymnasium footwear is to be worn indoors only during the school year. Also, students need to remove jewelry and tie long hair back for safety reasons. Water bottles are not allowed in the gym for safety reasons but students are welcomed to keep them in the classrooms.

A note from a parent or doctor is required should your child NOT be able to participate in class. Generally, if your child is well enough to attend school, he or she should be well enough to participate in PE class.

PE classes may be held outside during nice days, therefore students need to wear appropriate outdoor clothing to school on PE days. Students go outside every school day so no special announcement will be sent home for PE class.

Students can participate in a variety of extracurricular activities throughout the school year, which take place under adult supervision (suspended due to Covid).

A variety of active living activities are held during school time and activity /sports clubs are offered for each grade outside school time. Correspondence will be sent home regarding upcoming activities. Any parent or guardian is welcomed to volunteer in the extracurricular program.

If you have any questions or concerns, please telephone Ms. Etheridge @ 785 - 2814.
